Buying your first vibrator can feel like a big decision. It doesn't need to be. Most people are happiest starting with something small, simple and easy to clean, then working out what they like.
Start with three questions
- Outside, inside, or both? Most beginners start with external vibration. Small "bullet" and wand-style toys are made for that. Insertable and dual ("rabbit") styles come later for many people.
- Quiet or strong? Smaller toys are quieter and more discreet. Wands are stronger and deeper ("rumbly"), and a little louder.
- Rechargeable or batteries? Rechargeable toys cost a bit more but save on batteries and are usually waterproof or splash-proof.
Good first picks
- Je Joue G-Spot Silicone Rechargeable Bullet Purple ($69.95): a small, rechargeable silicone bullet with a gently curved tip. Easy to hold and easy to hide.
- Hitachi Magic Wand Mini Massager ($119.95): the well-known Magic Wand in a smaller size. Strong, deep vibration for external use.
- Je Joue Rabbit Bullet Vibrator Purple ($89.95): a small rabbit-style bullet if you're curious about dual stimulation without a big toy.
Materials: what to look for
Look for silicone (soft, non-porous, cleans easily) or hard plastics like ABS. Porous "jelly" materials are harder to keep clean. Our guide to toy materials explains the difference.
Don't forget lube
A little lube makes almost any toy more comfortable. Water-based lube works with every toy material, including silicone. Start with a small bottle such as JO H2O Classic Personal Lubricant 2oz ($11.95). See our lube guide for more.
Cleaning, simply
Clean your toy before the first use and after each use with mild soap and warm water or a toy cleaner such as Wicked Cleene Antibacterial Unscented Toy Cleaner 4.0oz ($14.95). Check the manufacturer's instructions for waterproofing first.
Quick answers
What size should my first vibrator be? Smaller is usually better to start. You can always size up.
Is a more expensive toy better? Not always, but well-known brands tend to use better motors, materials and warranties.
Will anyone know what I ordered? No. Every HUSH Canada order ships in a plain box or envelope, and your statement never lists what you bought.
